Star Productions Inc. was started in 1996 by Alan Smithson at the University of Guelph to service both the bars & clubs as well as on-campus special events and weddings. Since then, Star Productions has grown into Toronto’s Premium DJ Service. Here is a timeline of how our little company has grown into the entertainment powerhouse it is today!
1996 – Star Productions starts with one DJ, two CD Players and 1000 tracks. Alan is resident DJ at the Keg, Bullring, Palace and Van Gogh’s Ear.
1999 – Star Productions moves from Guelph to Mississauga and continues to service wedding clients and small corporate events. There are now two DJ’s and about 2000 tracks.
2002 – Alan quits his “real” job as a pharmaceutical representative to pursue his passion for music and DJ’ing. Star Productions hires its first full-time staff and starts to do more corporate events. Alan is still the resident DJ at Philthy McNasty’s in Oakville…(you know you went there at least once ;-)
2004 – Star Productions expands to offer more audio-visual productions and meeting AV. This expansion allows the DJ’s to put on a more robust show.
2006 – Star Productions incorporates and is now Star Productions Inc. Star Productions also acquires the website www.StarProductions.com for a whopping $3000 US. (that was a lot for a web address)
Star Productions wins the Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) Sam McCallion Award for Community Involvement.
2007 – Star Productions Inc. divides into two distinct divisions; Star Productions AV Division and Star Productions DJ Division. This allows for rapid expansion and penetration into the corporate markets.
Alan Smithson is nominated for Entertainer of the Year for the Canadian Event Industry Awards. Although he didn’t win, this is the first time a DJ has ever been nominated.
2008 – Star Productions Inc. moves into its current 2600 sq. ft. office on Argentia Road in Mississauga. This warehouse/office is ideally situated close to the 401/407/403 and QEW so no matter how bad the traffic is; we can always get to the show!
